This CBS Television Network position is embedded within the CBS News Division at the CBS News National Desk.
The Closed Caption Coordinator works with CBS Morning News and CBS This Morning as a liaison to the outside vendors of closed captioning services to CBS. This role requires the ability to handle strict deadlines and work independently in a live Network television news programming environment, with precision and accuracy. While Closed Captioning in fulfillment of our FCC requirements is the first responsibility, this position also provides support functions for the CBS News National Desk.
The primary Closed Captioning duties include:
Provision of preparatory information to the extent available, to outside caption service providers in advance of broadcast, such as show scripts, lists of proper names (people and places), song lyrics used in the program, rundowns and other available relevant material.
Monitor real-time live (e.g., Eastern time zone feed) & pre-recorded captioning program streams (e.g., repeat feeds to Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones) to determine presence of accurate captions.
Assist outside captioning service providers, and other relevant CBS internal operating units, with breaking news which requires closed captioning (e.g., CBS News Special Reports), any updates or changes to repeat feeds and/or contact caption service providers promptly if there is a caption loss or obvious compromise of captions.
Additional duties in support of the CBS News National Desk as assigned.
0-2 years of related work experience preferred (recent college graduates with relevant internship experience also okay to apply).
This role requires an early morning work schedule (3:30 am - 11:30 am) on Monday through Friday plus working holidays and overtime with short notice.
Prior news related experience in production, editorial and/or operations functions at a television network, local affiliate or at a cable network is also helpful.
Excellent organizational and communication skills are essential.
Good PC skills are also required.
Bachelor’s degree in a related major (e.g., Journalism, Communications or English) highly preferred.
