CBS Law Department seeks a manager to (i) clear third party content (footage, photographs, art, music & memorabilia) for all CBS News programs, (ii) clear CBS News programming for sales distribution, and (iii) assist in managing the Rights & Clearances Department staff.
Responsibilities include assistance with rights licensing, sales, and clearance, including:
Clearance: Negotiate rates and media rights packages with rights holders for the use of third party content in CBS News programming. Respond to time sensitive requests from producers in fast-paced environment and in breaking news situations. Foster business relationships with third-party vendors and internal business groups. Educate production teams on matters relating to licensing, location agreements, fair use analysis, and risk assessments.
Contracts Management: Draft and review standard license and location agreements. Vet and redline third-party agreements.
Advice and Consultation: Consult with News Review Attorneys, News Standards, and Music Operations, as necessary. Provide clients guidance on best practices.
Rights Memoranda: Draft and distribute CBS News program rights advisories to divisions throughout the company.
Staff Management: Help supervise the Rights & Clearances Department staff.
Rights File Maintenance: Maintain paper and electronic files, including agreements, invoices, payments, and correspondence relating to all CBS News programming. Manage rights library and e-library.
Invoice Management: Organize, process, and track invoices and payments to copyright holders. Follow-up on outstanding agreements and invoices by contacting show producers and rights holders.
Rights Database: Oversee the receipt and confirm the accuracy of footage & stills reports and music cue sheets from CBS News program production teams.
Research: Research restrictions related to CBS News programming in an effort to assess a program or segment’s availability for rebroadcast, sales, and distribution. Copyright ownership research.
Strong communication (written and verbal) and organization skills
Able to meet tight deadlines and prioritize multiple requests
Proficiency in MS Word and Excel (basic formulas); knowledge of PowerPoint is helpful
Team player, who will work well with employees in the law department, News, and other parts of CBS, as well as people outside the company
