CBS Sports is looking for an experienced editorial leader! This is an opportunity for someone with proven newsgathering and storytelling judgment to be a Sr. News Editor and central figure in the newsgathering and editorial guidance for productions across linear and digital platforms!

 

This role will direct the daily newsgathering efforts to support productions across platforms, leading a group of contributors to our CBS Sports College 247 network.

Our ideal candidate for this full-time staff position must be experienced at identifying news and emerging storylines; gathering and organizing articles and other sources for background, potential human-interest stories; evaluating and summarizing key points of storylines or commentaries; and providing recommendations and constructive feedback to enhance and support the coverage across CBS Sports content creation.

 

The candidate should cultivate strong, effective partnerships with contributors throughout the CBS Sports division, and beyond, to find opportunities, and help to develop and produce journalistically sound and editorially innovative content across multiple productions. To successfully deliver editorial mentorship to all productions, this Senior News Editor will have exceptional sports knowledge, the ability to make quick editorial decisions, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ideal candidate is hard-working and knowledgeable about sports journalism and storytelling, enthusiastic about contributing to and committed to upholding the highest editorial standards of the CBS Sports brand. The Senior News Editor will provide story ideas, script and content review for all platforms, and editorial support for major events coverage, as well as daily sports coverage. The Senior News Editor will be responsible for supervising and managing a team of News Editors, including scheduling the team, delegating assignments, level setting and providing feedback, and ensuring the team is operating effectively and efficiently.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor news feeds, including searching social & other media outlets, to gather and evaluate relevant news and information.
  • Prepare and distribute news briefs, scripts for broadcasts, and key points for graphic or video presentations on news across all sports, with an emphasis on NFL, college football and college basketball.
  • Communicate regularly with studio producers and other production contributors to discuss developing news and provide mentorship on the presentation of that news within our programming.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of sports media production, including knowledge of studio television show content creation or similar digital video programming
  • Serve as the leading editorial voice during live studio programming and partner with producers to generate urgent, effective coverage of breaking news.
  • Contribute to and guide content development and storytelling involving the subjects of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disabilities, and other culture-based topics.
  • Work closely with Production personnel, on-air talent, and content creators throughout the Sports division to pitch ideas, fact-check content, and respond real-time to questions and requests for guidance.
  • Prepare general background/research material for other entities as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent working knowledge of and curiosity about multiple sports, especially college sports
  • Demonstrated top-notch editorial judgment and understanding of broadcast production
  • Experience with variety of approaches to Internet searches and be proficient in electronic newsgathering techniques, including quickly navigating the Internet and standard methodologies for applying social media.
  • Be able to provide mentorship and supervision while also growing in a team-oriented environment
  • Proven ability at writing, editing and honing scripts and elements even under deadline.
  • Experience at gathering visual elements, prepping graphics and editing packages for segments is preferred

Experience:

  • 5+ years of newsroom or other editorial experience, preferably in journalism, production or related areas.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in sports journalism field is a plus

This is an in-person full-time role in Nashville, TN.
